Titanic Presentation

Date: 10/27/2011
Time:
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Description:
This free event presents a you-are-there account of how readers of the Daily Telegraph of London experienced first-hand the terrible news that Britain's largest passenger liner has gone down on her maiden voyage. Readers of today will experience the same shock as readers of yesterday who discovered that not only was the Titanic sinkable, it was also not equipped with enough lifeboats to save its over 2,000 passengers. The Daily Telegraph ran some 208 articles the first week after the sinking, with many hundreds more to follow. It has been said that the United Kingdom never recovered from this disaster to its shipping supremacy. Certainly, New York society never quite recovered from the loss of so many of its members, John Jacob Astor (perhaps the world's richest man), Benjamin Guggenheim (owner vast mining interests), Isidor Straus (founder of Macy's), Archibald Butt (President Taft's personal aide), George D. Widener (Widener library at Harvard), Henry B. Harris (theatrical producer), Francis Millet (American painter), and John Borland Thayer (head of the Pennsylvania Railroad).
