Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) wrote over 1,000 American folksongs in his lifetime – and he didn’t use an original melody for single one of them! This sing along program tells the true story of the man who wrote “This Land is Your Land,” the best known English language folksong on the planet. 

 

One of the premier autoharpists in the world, Adam Miller is a renowned American folksinger and natural-born storyteller. An accomplished folklorist, historian, musicologist, and song-collector, he has amassed a remarkable repertoire of over 5,000 songs. Miller accompanies his rich, resonant baritone voice with lively finger-picking acoustic guitar and stunningly beautiful autoharp melodies. A masterful entertainer who never fails to get his audience singing along, he has distinguished himself as one of the great interpreters of American folktales and folksongs, and as a performer who appeals to audiences of all ages.

Before the Beatles ever wrote their own songs or performed on stage, they were inspired to do so by American rock 'n' roll records. This 90-minute multimedia program will illustrate the influence of Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and other American recording artists from the 1950's on the Beatles through side-by-side comparisons and musical analysis of Beatles covers and original recordings.

Aaron Krerowicz is a professional Beatles scholar with an A.D. from the University of Hartford, The Hartt School; a M.M. from Boston University, College of fine Arts; and B.M. from Butler University, Jordan College of Fine Arts.

Nashville Opera Presents Jack and the Beanstalk

HCA/TriStar and Nashville Opera OnTour present a musical treat for ages Pre-K through 5th grade: John Davies' Jack and the Beanstalk.

In this operatic retelling of the classic children's fairy tale, Jack disobeys his mother by trading his beloved cow for magical beans instead of buying food. When he meets a giant and his wife atop the beanstalk, Jack discovers who stole his hen that laid golden eggs. In the end, both Jack and the giant learn a few lessons while children learn the timeless lesson of "the Golden Rule."

This family friendly 45-minute production is sung in English and set to music by Gilbert and Sullivan. Don't miss this opportunity to introduce your children to opera!

Steinway Initiative

Elaine Zhang, Claire Zang, and Rina Xu are three of the children who took turns filling our lobby with beautiful music on Monday, December 8th. The Brentwood Library has a privately owned Steinway piano on loan on which piano students may schedule a  performance.

The library hopes to acquire a Steinway of our very own for more community music performances, but we need your help. Please consider donating to our Steinway Initiative. You may click here for more information.

Williamson Wind Quintet

The Williamson Wind Quintet is a group of musicians who play with the Williamson County Community Band. They formed their quintet in 2011 and are available for performances in the greater Nashville area.

Music from the Backyard & Front Porch

Internationally acclaimed musician Lauren Pelon will appear in a unique concert at The Brentwood Library on Sunday, October 26, 2014, at 3pm. Under the title “Music from the Backyard & Front Porch,” Lauren Pelon will perform on approximately twenty ancient and modern wind, string and free-reed instruments, and voice.

This program of American music features the music of America's indigenous peoples, as well as the songs and instruments of America's many immigrants and Pelon's own compositions. “I believe in the importance of local music and local stories,” says Pelon, “and I like to celebrate its great variety and range. This program gives me a chance to do that.”

Pelon plays an astonishing array of instruments. Among the instruments she will be using are Native American flute, concertina, pennywhistle, ocarina, eagle bone flute, guitar, recorder and psalmodikon, all prominent in American history. Other instruments (guitar-lute, archlute, bowed psaltery, lyre, hurdy-gurdy, gemshorns, cornamuse, krummhorn, schreierpfeife, shawm, electric wind instrument and pedalboard) will be used to tell a story or illustrate an idea.

Lauren Pelon has performed throughout the U.S. and in China, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Australia, and New Zealand. She is noted for her versatile use of a diverse array of instruments, but Pelon has also won recognition for her lovely soprano voice, and for her compelling compositions and arrangements of music from many countries and cultures. Lauren has performed with symphony orchestras, The Philadelphia String Quartet, on Garrison Keillor's “A Prairie Home Companion,” and at the Russian Institute for the History of the Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. Pelon was the recipient of the 2001 “Artist of the Year” award from The Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council. More recently, she received a 2010 Artist Initiative Award and 2014 Arts Tour Minnesota Grant Award from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
