Be Well, Brentwood!

The New Year brings a time of reflection and for some, the custom of making resolutions. Here at The Brentwood Library we are excited for a new adventure. A team of our employees will be participating in a wellness campaign and sharing our progress with you.

Whole Health

Our Be Well team will work together to encourage healthy living. Using library resources, we will share our experiences with various classes the library offers--from exercise, to recipes, to meditation, and simple living. We will share online resources, library programs, books, videos, and more.

Our Goal

This challenge will encourage us to look at how all the areas of our lives are connected. Instead of strictly limiting ourselves, we hope to add more of the good and fun together working toward our individual health goals.

We hope you will join us Be Well, Brentwood!

Stress Relief

Looking for some stress relief? The Brentwood Library offers several programs to help you take a step away from your busy life and take some time for yourself.

Morning Yoga is offered on Mondays and Fridays at 10:00 am. The class teaches students the fundamentals of yoga postures and lays the foundation for an effective yoga practice. It focuses on improving flexibility and gaining clarity in the mind.

Restorative Yoga is offered Sundays at 3:00 pm. Beginning with slow, gentle movement, this class uses padded bolsters, blankets, blocks and chairs for a supportive environment to experience rest and relaxation in a wakeful state.

Tai Chi Qigong is offered Thursdays at 9:00 am. This is a beginners level class classthat concentrates on the very basics of Tai Chi and Qigong, with emphasis on form, focus, intention and changing weight safely. Students will learn warm up sequence, the crane and deer animal frolics and the first 6 movements of the sun style short form.

Tai Chi is offered Thursdays at 10:00 am. This class focuses on short form of Sun Style Tai Chi and Qigong. This low impact form of movement has been shown to promote relaxation, relieve tension and enhance the mind/body connection, while improving balance, coordination, posture, flexibility and muscle tone.

Guided Meditation is offered Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. This class offers a gentle guided meditation designed to help you hit the reset button on your nervous system and bring you a sense of peace and calm in one short hour.

Laughter-cise is offered Fridays at 11:15 am. This class teaches laughter exercises that can be practiced alone or in a group. Continuous short bursts of laughter produce profound physical, mental, and emotional benefits by forcing deep breathing, which increases oxygen delivery and lowers stress hormones. Research shows that one minute of continuous laughter is equal to ten minutes on a rowing machine!

All classes require registration and some are available for as little as $5 a class! For more information and to register check out our calendar of events or contact Robyn Zandi at x8510.

Lecture: Benefits of Medical Hypnotism

We are in an age of healing that no longer relies on "one size fits all" treatments. A vast number of people, including doctors and members of scientific communities, understand healing is a process of body/mind/soul integration. Medical Hypnosis works in a variety of ways to support individuals in taking control of their healing and well-being.

Hypnosis works as an adjunct to physicians and the medical community. We call this “Complementary Medical Hypnosis.” Hypnosis is also excellent for Behavioral Medicine and Transpersonal Medicine. Hypnosis can offer substantial benefits for:
  • Pain management
  • Cancer treatment support
  • PTSD, ADD/ADHD
  • Stress, Smoking, Weight
  • Support for Terminal Illness
Hypnosis is approved by the AMA and the National Institute of Health, NIH, with a history of positive results in treating cancer patients' pain. Medical Hypnotism is taught at some major universities, including University of Chicago and UCLA Medical Center. Join Marvin Wilkerson, certified in Medical Hypnotism by National Guild of Hypnotists. There is something to learn for everyone.

Free Seminar - Let Your House Speak: The Lost Art of Hospitality

Women today face unbearable pressure to have a beautiful, clean, organized home, as well as the ability to cook delicious, well-balanced meals for their family and look like a fashion model in the process. Endless television programs repeatedly show us how easy it is to be a professional chef, accomplished designer, weekend architect, and an all-round hospitality expert. Women feel pulled in more directions than ever before. In the end, what is truly important for families today? Can we still make time for friends, family, neighbors and others who need us while we balance everything else?  Being hospitable doesn’t mean hours of time for others; just well-intentioned, purposeful actions.  Hospitality is an attitude, a condition of the heart that we are called to share with others.

You will walk away with a simple and practical approach to the use of meditation in your life, and gain an understanding of how and why meditation is being used successfully in the treatment of trauma and pain management and experience a short guided mediation.
