Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
I enjoyed Audrey Niffenegger's second novel, "Her Fearful Symmetry," in which Niffenegger explores love, grief, and loss. In terms of characterization, this book is better than "The Time Traveler's Wife." Niffenegger's characters here are totally unique; I've never encountered another pair in literature like Valentina and Julia, identical twins who are utterly dependent on each other. Their bizarre intimacy draws me in and holds me until the story's end. Furthermore, the supporting characters are well-rounded and interesting. The girls' neighbor, Martin, especially repels and fascinates me. The tone is light, but dark secrets abound, and the tension builds nicely. Those expecting a love story like "The Time Traveler's Wife" will be disappointed. Instead, this book is recommended to readers who like strange and unique characters, because this story is filled with them.
