Pardon Our Construction

We've got an exciting project on the horizon! The Brentwood Library will be installing an automated book handler at the drive-up return station!

Once completed, the new system will process returned materials the instant they enter the building. This streamlined approach to returns will free slots on your account immediately. No more waiting to refill your account with new items! Patrons can even choose to get an emailed confirmation of items returned or take a printed return receipt right on the spot.

The construction project will take place May 24 - June 13. Because the outdoor book return will be unavailable during this time, making after hours returns impossible, library materials borrowed will automatically have an extended loan period. So no worries! Patrons will have extra time to return materials during regular business hours.

Thank you for your patience while we work to improve our library services.

Books, Magazines, and Music at Your Fingertips

In today’s Netflix, Amazon, all you can eat/watch/read for $9.99 world, one huge resource is often overlooked. What resource is that? Well, the library, of course!

If you are looking for a certain eBook, your first stop should be The Brentwood Library through either R.E.A.D.S., 3M, or TumbleBooks. EBooks are digital copies of books that download to an electronic device to read as a book. R.E.A.D.S is a statewide collection of eBooks and audiobooks and 3M is a service the library pays for to provide for our patrons. We are already subscribing, so you don’t have to!

If you are interested in digital audiobooks, books you can listen to on your computer or mobile device, you want to check out R.E.A.D.S. and OneClickDigital. Our reference team is happy to show you how to set up an account or download books. We also have monthly classes on how to download books to your Kindle or iPad. Don’t worry, it may seem confusing, but once you’ve done it a time or two, you’ll be flying through your to-read list at warp speed.

Are you an avid magazine reader? Then zinio is for you. The library subscribes to digital magazines that you can download to your e-reader, smartphone, or computer. We have current issues of favorites such as Better Homes and Gardens, Elle, Esquire, Food Network, Living, US Weekly, and many specialty magazines on subjects from yoga to gluten-free cooking to woodworking.

Is music your thing? With Freegal you can download and stream music. Streaming is unlimited and your library membership entitles you to five free downloads per week. Check out the cool “My Library Top 10” to see what your neighbors are listening to.

The Brentwood Library media rooms stocks many popular TV series, movies, and children’s shows. Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, True Blood, Homeland, The Walking Dead, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, and Game of Thrones are just a few titles we offer.

Using saved searches

Have you ever searched for a title and discovered that the library does not have it?  Well, there is a way to be notified if the library does purchase it in the future!  Here's how:
  • Log in to your library account
  • Search for the title of the book you are interested in
  • When the computer tells you no items by this title, click save search
  • Follow the prompts to save your search
  • Choose whether you want the computer to run the saved search weekly or monthly
The computer system will run the search automatically and send you an email when the title has been added to the catalog. You can then log in and place it on hold, even while it is still on order, so you'll be among the first to get the item.

Want to create a saved search for new titles by your favorite author?  You can do that too!  Just follow these steps:
  • Log in to your library account
  • Do an author search for your favorite author (for example: Patterson, James)
  • Click save search
  • Follow the prompts to name your search and choose how often you want it to run

The computer system will run the search automatically and send you an email when titles by your author have been added to the catalog. You can then log in and place the item on hold so you'll get it as soon as possible.

Note: The saved search function and holds do not work with the ebook and eaudiobook titles that are in the computer.

"Scents" and Sensibility

Fragrances surround us, and sometimes we scarcely notice them. But some people, especially those with asthma or allergies, are highly sensitive to scents and smells. If you’ve ever encountered a perfume ad in a magazine—and who hasn’t—then you know how well paper can absorb scents. With that in mind, we appreciate our patrons' consideration regarding fragrances, such as perfume or cigarette smoke. Those smells can permeate a book, causing a health issue for the next patron. Thank you for regarding the good health of others and helping us to maintain a quality collection for the use of all Brentwood citizens.

Another benefit for Brentwood Library members

Your Brentwood Library card gives you access to thousands of tangible items, like books, movies and CDs. You can even find the best answers online with the library's trusted, vetted online resources.

But did you know that having a Brentwood Library card gives you access to lots of other libraries? If we don't own a book you want, we can borrow a book from another library for you in a process called Interlibrary Loan.

And if you need to visit the Vanderbilt libraries to view a DVD or look at a book that doesn't circulate, you can check out an access card from the Brentwood Library.

The Vanderbilt University Libraries (except Eskind Biomedical Library) are open to the public during designated daytime hours, all days of the week. During evenings, libraries have designated hours when a Vanderbilt access card is required for entry.

As a Brentwood Library member, you can check out one of these access card at the Brentwood Library, and use it for up to one week. You'll have to return the card in person, not in the book drop, and there is a fine for returning it late.

Questions? Contact the Reference Department by email, or call 371-0090, ext 820.
