January Book Club Discussions

Join us for our January Book Discussions! These discussions are open to the public, and you don't need to register in advance. Just read the book and come prepared to meet new people and take part in a lively discussion. Newcomers welcome!

The Morning Book Discussion Group is reading Picking Cotton by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino. John Grisham says, "Few stories of wrongful convictions have happy endings, but the one told by Ronald Cotton and Jennifer Cannino is far different.  It is the powerful account of violence, rage, redemption, and, ultimately, forgiveness." The Morning Book Discussion Group meets on Tuesday, January 28 at 10:00 am.

The Evening Book Discussion Group is reading The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. An Amazon review states, "In her haunting, evocative debut Eowyn Ivey stakes her claim on a Russian fairy tale, daring the reader--and the characters--to be lulled into thinking they know the ending. But, as with the Alaskan wilderness, there’s far more here than meets the eye. On the surface it’s the story of a childless pioneer couple running from their East Coast lives and struggling to survive in the harshest of climates while also attempting to reconnect with each other; but it’s also the story of the spring of hope that bubbles out of new friendships, of the slow realization of love for a surrogate child, of the ties between man and nature. With the transparent prose of a fairy tale and descriptions to put nature writing to shame, The Snow Child immerses readers in a 1920s Alaska that will draw them back again and again." The Evening Book Discussion Group meets on Wednesday, January 15 at 6:30 pm.

The Evening Book Discussion Group is reading Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. She takes us back in time and into the life of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the nineteenth century. Grace Marks has been convicted for her involvement in the vicious murders of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, and Nancy Montgomery, his housekeeper and mistress... Now serving a life sentence, Grace claims to have no memory of the murders. Dr. Simon Jordan listens to her story while bringing her closer and closer to the day she cannot remember. What will he find in attempting to unlock her memories?" The Evening Book Discussion Group meets on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:30 p.m.

The Morning Book Discussion Group is reading Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. Scott Turrow says, "This graceful, assured first novel tells the remarkable story of the long-lived affair between Frank Lloyd Wright, a passionate and impossible figure, and Mamah Cheney, a married woman whom Wright beguiled and led beyond the restraint of convention. It is engrossing, provocative reading." The Morning Book Discussion Group meets on Tuesday, November 26 at 10:00 a.m.

Book Discussion Selections for August

Join us for our August Book Discussions! These discussions are open to the public, and you don't need to register in advance. Just read the book and come prepared to meet new people and take part in a lively discussion.

The Morning Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 27 at 10:00 a.m. to discuss Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Amazon says, "Marriage can be a real killer. One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work “draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction.” Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn.

The Evening Book Club will meet on Wednesday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss City of Women by David R. Gillham. Amazon says, "It is 1943—the height of the Second World War. With the men away at the front, Berlin has become a city of women. On the surface, Sigrid Schröder is the model German soldier’s wife: She goes to work every day, does as much with her rations as she can, and dutifully cares for her meddling mother-in-law, all the while ignoring the horrific immoralities of the regime. But behind this façade is an entirely different Sigrid, a woman of passion who dreams of her former Jewish lover, now lost in the chaos of the war. But Sigrid is not the only one with secrets."

Read20 Book Club Selection for July: George vs. George

George vs. George by Rosalyn Schanzer is the Read20 Book Club selection for July. The book brings to life both sides of the American Revolution, just in time for Independence Day. There are two enemies, both named George: George Washington, the man who freed the American colonies from the British; and George III, the British king who lost them. Who was right? History teaches us that there are two sides to every story.

Let's Discuss The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

Good news--there's still one week left before our next Morning Book Discussion group meets! Grab a copy of The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey today, and join us next Tuesday to discuss it. It's received glowing praise:

If Willa Cather and Gabriel Garcia Marquez had collaborated on a book, The Snow Child would be it. It is a remarkable accomplishment -- a combination of the most delicate, ethereal, fairytale magic and the harsh realities of homesteading in the Alaskan wilderness in 1918. Stunningly conceived, beautifully told, this story has the intricate fragility of a snowflake and the natural honesty of the dirt beneath your feet, the unnerving reality of a dream in the night.

-- Robert Goolrick, New York Times bestselling author of A Reliable Wife

The Morning Book Discussion Group will meet on Tuesday, February 26 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fall Room.
