Fisk-Vanderbilt Roadshow Planetarium


Fisk-Vanderbilt Roadshow Planetarium

In partnership with Vanderbilt University’s historic Dyer Observatory, the Physics & Astronomy departments of both Fisk University and Vanderbilt University are proud to offer a public outreach initiative comprising a large inflatable planetarium. By projecting a representation of the night sky onto the dome’s interior, we are able to teach students about the constellations and various mythologies, the nature of stars, the Sun-Earth-Moon system, the Solar System planets and their motions, and many other celestial phenomena in a fun yet informative manner. Creative Writing: What if?

Jennifer Trafton will teach a series of 6-week foundational creative writing classes introducing kids to a writer's way of looking at the world. Everyone has an imagination—it is the source of inventions, scientific discoveries, great art and music and stories, fear as well as hope—and one of the most important questions our imagination asks is “What if?"

Payment will be expected the day of class, before the class begins. Payment can be made in exact cash or check.

Morning with Santa and Magic Show

Morning with Santa and Magic Show
Saturday, December 5. Doors open at 9:00 a.m.
Free event. Tickets required.
Bring the whole family to meet Santa, play a variety of games, and enjoy a magic show. Magician Scott Humston will perform his magic show at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 AM.

This hour long program is filled with sensory activities providing lots of hands-on learning for ages 9 months to 4 years of age. It is limited to 20 children with their parents. Each session will be the same, but geared towards each grade level group. Limit of 30 children per class.

"Spies in the Universe" - Creative Writing Classes by Jennifer Trafton

3rd-5th grade, 9-13 year olds
Children’s Storytime Room
4:30-5:30pm
Jennifer Trafton, author of "The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic", will teach a 6-week series of foundational creative writing classes introducing kids to a writer's way of looking at the world. Different sessions will be held throughout the year. When you register for the 1st session for the 6-week program, you have registered for all the sessions in the 6-week program. Limit of 10 students per 6-week session.

Painting with Words: October 21st & 28th, November 4th & 18th, and December 2nd & 9th

During this 6-week session, the writers will learn to be "spies in the universe" by paying close attention to the world around them, find astonishment in ordinary things, start a
word collection, and then use some basic writing tools to "paint pictures with words." This will be a very fun, interactive, and hands-on class.

Children's Yoga

Grades 3-5 - 5:15PM-6:00PM
Instructor fee: $5.00 per class
An exciting age appropriate yoga class just for kids taught by Theresa Kuhn. This class is designed to foster coordination, cooperation , concentration and a little silliness, while building attention and focus. Mats, props, and laughter provided!

Theresa has been a yoga teacher since 2007 and teaches the Guided Meditation here at the Library. She holds several specialized training in yoga including YogaFit Kids and Radiant Child Yoga but most importantly she is the mother of 4.

here is a limit of 15 children per session.

Class Fee $5.00 per class. Payment will be taken the day of class, before class begins. We can accept exact cash or check made payable to the Brentwood Library.

Summer Reading: The Story Begins


This year's Summer Reading Program theme for kids is 

Every Hero Has a Story. 

In fact, every hero, every villain, every reader has a story. What's your story? Come explore story after story during our summer reading program for kids, teens, and adults.

Summer Program Registration begins 

April 30th

9-am - 12 pm in the Library

and 12 pm online.

These programs for ages 6-12 fill up very quickly, so mark you calendar!

Summer Reading Log Registration occurs May 28th -- July 3rd.

Bugs, Blooms, & Birds Kids' Art Classes for Spring Break


 
 
Looking for a fabulous spring break activity? Children in grades 1-5 can join popular Brentwood art teacher Trish Walker for an exciting art class and walk away with a finished art product.

Trish will teach a series of classes on March 17th, 18th, and 19th. Children may register for only 1 class per day. There is a limit of 20 children per class.

Each class focuses on different skills. Choose from these exciting Bugs, Blooms, & Birds Kids' Art Class options:

MINI CANVAS PAINTING
March 17th at 1:00-2:00pm or 2:15-3:15pm
Students will paint a mini canvas using acrylic paint.

REPOUSSE (Metal Etching)
March 18th at 1:00-2:00pm or 2:15-3:15pm
Repousse is a method of decorating metals with a wooden stylus.

WATERCOLOR
March 19th at 1:00-2:00pm or 2:15-3:15pm
Students will learn to use watercolor in this project.

The fee for each class is $10.00 (materials included) and can be paid on the day of the class by exact cash or checks made payable to the Brentwood Library.

Nashville Opera Presents Jack and the Beanstalk



HCA/TriStar and Nashville Opera OnTour present a musical treat for ages Pre-K through 5th grade: John Davies' Jack and the Beanstalk.

In this operatic retelling of the classic children's fairy tale, Jack disobeys his mother by trading his beloved cow for magical beans instead of buying food. When he meets a giant and his wife atop the beanstalk, Jack discovers who stole his hen that laid golden eggs. In the end, both Jack and the giant learn a few lessons while children learn the timeless lesson of "the Golden Rule."

This family friendly 45-minute production is sung in English and set to music by Gilbert and Sullivan. Don't miss this opportunity to introduce your children to opera!

Enjoy a visit with our featured guest—Santa!
Bring your camera and plan on staying for refreshments. 
 
Magician Scott Humston will be on hand again this year to amaze and delight us  with his fascinating magic and hilarious showmanship. The magic show will be offered at three times:  9:30am, 10:30am and 11:30am. 
 
You must have a ticket to participate in either the Morning with Santa or the Magic Show. Tickets are available beginning Monday, November 17th at the Children's Desk. These are free events, but tickets are required.
