NEW SESSION - Strength and Cardio Interval Training

The absolute best way to stay in shape is to combine strength training and cardio through interval training. So we've added another session with health and wellness expert Leks Stanic!

Because this type of fitness training works so well, celebrities and celebrity trainers are opting for this style of training called high intensity interval training, Don't worry about the "high intensity" part! That's the beauty of having a personal trainer next to you to guide you and adjust the exercises for your individual level. So you can workout with a baby boomer one side and an athlete on another side, yet each of you will get the best workout for your personal needs!

Our sessions are small, and our trainer does not work out with the group. Instead, Leks is there to make sure you have the proper form, the proper level of intensity, and that you are working out in a safe environment. You'll also use a lot of power bands (not resistance bands); it may seem that they are not doing much to raise your fitness, but once you start training with them, we are sure you'll change your mind!

Your trainer, Leks Stanic, has made the transition from unhealthy to healthy lifestyle, and wants to help you do the same. To that end, she has over ten fitness and specialty certifications, so she can help you do it correctly and safely. Leks has worked with a wide range of people-- from athletes to people with specific needs, such as women with bone-loss issues, to large group training.

Come out and try this strength and cardio interval training for only $5 a session! See for yourself what all the fuss is about.

Mondays, starting March 16

9:00 am - 9:50 am

Cost is $5 per class, payable to the instructor at the time of the class. Registration is required.
Register online or call 615-371-0090, ext. 8150.

How to Improve Your Gut Health

This 3-week program is designed to help you improve your overall health by dealing with the gastro-intestinal (GI) system. Although the gut has many functions, it primarily serves as a protective barrier against foreign bodies that stimulate the body's protective response. This ongoing response then leads to chronic symptoms and disorders.

Susan Bruey, RN MSN CHC, will teach the function of the GI tract and the possible dietary and lifestyle triggers that can damage its integrity. You will also learn how to assess your gut function and how to take actions to improve it if necessary.

Many disorders begin in the gut. So if you are interested in taking action to improve your health, you'll want to know how to improve your gut health. The class fee is $50 (for all 3 weeks), and registration is required.

Tuesdays, March 17, March 24, & March 31

1:00 - 3:00 pm

Register online, or call 615-371-0090, ext. 8510.

Be Well, Brentwood! (progress)

We are officially more than a week into our challenge. Our team is checking in with each other frequently and we have some ideas and experiences to share with you.

Morning Yoga with Dierdre
From Robin:
I used to do yoga all the time, but after blowing out my knee and then getting pregnant, I let it fall to the side. Dierdre is a knowledgeable instructor and incredibly easy to follow. This is a class anyone can attend -- even with a bum knee and arthritic back I had no problem being able to do the poses. It is a great way to strengthen muscles and have some much needed "me" time.
Sign up for Morning Yoga on Mondays or Fridays at 10am.

Chair Awareness Through Movement® with the Feldenkrais® Method
From Katie:
I went to this class because I was really curious what it would be like. Fran was very welcoming. The first part was becoming more aware of our bodies. We focused on posture and breathing. It was very calming.
From Mary:
I have problems with my knee. It hasn't felt this good in months. This class was amazing.
Sign up for Chair Awareness on Wednesdays from 1-2pm.

Yoga
From Heather:
I've been in other yoga classes before and I didn't think I liked yoga. They took "the practice" way too seriously! Norman leads a playful class that incorporates fresh, new poses into the standard movements that offer a certain level of comfort in a session. He provides a positive and encouraging environment and will adapt poses for your level - whatever that may be!
Sign up for Evening Yoga on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 6:40pm.

We've also checked out Essential Oils 101, Whole Foods Market Engine 2 28-Day Challenge, and Pilates. More updates coming soon. Are you taking steps to Be Well? We hope so!

Free CPR Friends and Family Fridays in Brentwood

CITY OF BRENTWOOD

FIRE AND RESCUE

Recently the Brentwood Fire and Rescue Department has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of people who are surviving cardiac arrests. This is due to three primary factors; new hypothermia protocols, increased public access to Automatic Electronic Defibrillators (AEDs), and initiation of bystander CPR. With the help of citizens, we hope to see that trend continue!
CPR is not difficult or time consuming to learn. Every Friday in the month of February the Brentwood Fire & Rescue Department is offering free classes the public. Each class lasts approximately 2 hours and offers training on infant, child, and adult CPR. For adult CPR, participants will be taught both traditional and “hands only” CPR (no mouth-to-mouth breathing). This class will utilize the American Heart Association (AHA) “Family and Friends” curriculum, therefore no CPR card will be issued. More information regarding this program can be found on the AHA website at www.heart.org.

Only one Friday commitment is required to learn these lifesaving skills. To sign up or for more information regarding times and locations, contact firefighter Scott Barnes at barness@brentwood-tn.org or call 371-2200 ext. 4523 or Robin Forte at forter@brentwood-tn.org (615-371-0170).

Be Well, Brentwood!

The New Year brings a time of reflection and for some, the custom of making resolutions. Here at The Brentwood Library we are excited for a new adventure. A team of our employees will be participating in a wellness campaign and sharing our progress with you.

Whole Health

Our Be Well team will work together to encourage healthy living. Using library resources, we will share our experiences with various classes the library offers--from exercise, to recipes, to meditation, and simple living. We will share online resources, library programs, books, videos, and more.

Our Goal

This challenge will encourage us to look at how all the areas of our lives are connected. Instead of strictly limiting ourselves, we hope to add more of the good and fun together working toward our individual health goals.

Obesogens - Common Chemicals that Make Us Fat

Obesity is the leading cause of preventable illness in America today, and it is most often attributed to eating and drinking more calories than we expend through physical activities. But there may be more to this story.
Obesogens are chemicals that have the ability to alter fat metabolism and promote fat retention. Because we are unknowingly exposed to these chemicals every day, they can be a hidden cause of weight gain and obesity, and may be contributing to the inability to lose weight.

Free Seminar: Thursday, October 2nd from 1-3pm

During this lecture, Mrs. Bruey will present information about the primary types of obesogens that are found in our homes today and she will offer actions that we can take to avoid exposure and eliminate these specific types of toxins from our lives.

Register online or call 615-371-0090 ext 8510
